What Kind of Apples Do I Use for Apple Crisp?

So, which apples are best for this easy apple crisp?

Honestly, you can use any apples you love!

My personal go-to for this recipe is Granny Smith—they add the perfect tartness next to all the sweet goodness in this apple recipe. But if you’re into a bit more sweetness, any golden delicious apples are fantastic choices too. Just pick the apples that make your taste buds happy!

This apple crisp recipe has way less sugar than most, but trust me, it’s just as delicious—maybe even better!

I remember making it a few years back, and while it was fantastic for me, I heard it didn’t turn out as well for some of my family.

So I’ve gone back, retested, and changed up the recipe to make it even better. I’m thrilled to hear that with these updates, it’s now coming out perfectly and family is gushing over this recipe.

How to Make this Easy Homemade Apple Crisp

If you didn’t know, apples take a while to release their moisture. This means you need to cut your apples into small or thinner pieces.

I switched from chunky apple pieces to thin slices, which cook faster and get nice and juicy. I also added a bit of liquid to the filling and cut down on the starch.

To keep the topping from getting too crispy, you’ll bake the apples for 20 minutes first, then add the topping. This little trick actually works out nicely since you can get the apples going while you mix up the topping.

And there you have it!

You’ve created an apple dessert that’s as comforting and flavorful as apple pie but way easier to make.

The Apples for Homemade Apple Crisp

Granny Smith apples are a top choice because they hold their shape and get tender without turning to mush in the oven.

Their tart flavor softens and sweetens just right, providing a perfect contrast in your crisp.

If you’re up for a splurge and something other than the typical golden delicious variety, Honeycrisp apples are another fantastic option.

They have similar qualities and have become pretty easy to find these days. For a little extra variety, you could even mix both Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples.

Ingredients

  • 6 Granny Smith apples cored and sliced into ¼” thick wedges
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 Tbsp corn starch
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut into small cubes
  • pinch of kosher salt

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Butter an 8×8 baking dish or spray it with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped apples with granulated sugar, 3/4 tsp of cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Stir until well combined, then transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, prepare the topping. Combine brown sugar, oats, flour, the remaining 1 tsp of cinnamon, salt, and diced cold butter. Use a pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands to cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles pea-sized crumbs.
  • Spread the topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish and gently pat it down.
  • Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!
